Belfry given ‘green’ light to transform towers

Three of the tallest buildings in Birkenhead are being transformed into ‘green giants’ thanks to a revolutionary heating system designed and built in Warrington.

Residents at Vittoria Court, Neston Gardens and Knowsley Court, three high-rise properties owned by Wirral Partnership Homes, will be among the first in the UK to have their heating and hot water supplied direct from a new energy-efficient EcoPod Heating System.

The system will reduce the buildings’ carbon footprint by more than 40 per cent. Residents will also benefit from a similar reduction in annual fuel bills.

Brian Seddon, senior projects manager at Wirral Partnership Homes, said:

“As part of a £27m investment programme in our high rise blocks, we are committed to providing good quality housing and efficient heating systems, using renewable technology. What I like about the EcoPod is it has proved particularly successful in high-rise buildings, both in terms of reducing running costs and the amount of maintenance it requires. It will also reduce our carbon output.

The existing systems at Vittoria Court, Neston Gardens and Knowsley Court are rather out-dated, extremely inefficient and don’t meet tenants’ heating requirements.

We therefore want to replace them with something that is efficient, cost-effective and, ultimately, better for the environment, and we believe the EcoPod fits the bill.

We will install the EcoPod system in these three blocks alongside many other internal and external improvements.”
