Belfry signs exclusive EcoPod deal with Carillion
BELFRY Group has signed a deal with leading UK energy services company, Carillion, to exclusively market and install its award-winning EcoPod heating system. The revolutionary system, which was designed and developed by Belfry MD Keith Rimmer to help alleviate fuel poverty, uses a combination of renewable technologies to virtually halve energy costs and emissions in a wide range of buildings. The collaboration agreement gives Carillion the exclusive right to market, sell and install the EcoPod system worldwide. Keith Rimmer, Managing Director of the Warrington-based Belfry Group, says: “This is a major deal for Belfry Group and it has the potential to open up some amazing opportunities. “Carillion Energy Services shared our vision for the future of EcoPod and we are excited at the prospect of driving it to the forefront of the renewable energy market.” Carillion Energy Services director Phil Shepley says: “EcoPod has already proved to be an outstanding solution for reducing fuel bills – by over 40% in some cases – and carbon emissions. A major benefit is that it allows renewable energy solutions to be introduced into large apartment blocks and, for the fuel poor, EcoPod brings significant reductions in energy costs to those who need it most. “The EcoPod system has already had tremendous success. Combining with Carillion means that we can now bring EcoPod to a wider customer base and we will have the delivery capability to expand the use of EcoPod across the public and private sectors and in domestic and commercial applications. “Carillion has an exclusive licence to provide EcoPod to customers worldwide and by investing in this innovative system, we can build on the current installations around Manchester and Liverpool. “Collaborating with the Belfry Group in this way allows us to further develop a sustainable business in line with our 2020 Strategy for Sustainability.” EcoPod reduces carbon emissions and energy costs by using a combination of renewable technologies, in a self-contained system retro-fitted to existing and new buildings. Clients include local authorities, housing associations, trusts and commercial and industrial property owners and schools. Key benefits of EcoPod include:
EcoPod is delivered to site fully commissioned and working ready to be lifted by crane into position. The pre-prepared reinforced steel base the EcoPod is lowered onto ensures good weight distribution and provides a solid foundation. If installation on the roof is not suitable, the system can also be installed within a building. Notes to editors EcoPod was voted 2011 Project of the Year and Environmental Initiative of the Year by leading trade publication Heating and Ventilating News for Chartist House in Hyde, Manchester. The project consisted of a 16-storey high-rise block and technology used included the EcoPod system, featuring a thermal solar, bespoke building management system, cascade boilers, thermal stores, inverter smart circulation pumps and a plastic high riser system. The modular plant room was constructed off-site and lifted onto the roof for final fitting. The project also included the fitting of 96 heat monitors within heat distribution units, installed within each apartment. The building management system provides real-time web-based monitoring and 24-hour access. With benefits for vulnerable people and fire protection options for all, the EcoPod system has reduced carbon emissions from 160,000 kg to 69,000 kg. LED lighting and inverter packs were also installed, allowing the project to achieve a reduction in fuel costs of 50 per cent and addressing fuel poverty issues, with savings passed directly to the client. As there is no stored DHW or individual gas boilers, no L8 testing or landlord gas certification is required. The system was also recently short listed in the categories ‘Most Innovative Product’ and ‘Most Innovative Use of Renewable Technology’ at the Housing Innovation Awards. EcoPod is Lifted into place at Barton Village!
A revolutionary heating system that protects vulnerable residents and helps to alleviate fuel poverty has been installed at an ‘Eco Village’ in Greater Manchester. Onlookers at City West’s Barton Village were left open-mouthed as a giant crane lifted the first EcoPod high above the surrounding roof tops and onto Engel's House. As part of the £14.3 million regeneration of Barton Village, a total of four EcoPod heating systems are being installed on top of high-rise tower blocks at the site in Eccles. Keith Rimmer, Managing Director of Warrington-based Belfry Group, designed the EcoPod to alleviate fuel poverty in high-rise buildings. As well as reducing fuel costs and carbon emissions by more than 40 per cent, it also features an innovative Building Management System (BMS), which automatically alerts landlords when ‘at risk’ tenants fail to adequately heat their properties. Mr Rimmer said: “It was quite a spectacular sight to see the EcoPod being lifted into position by a giant crane.” Colette McKune, Director of Asset Management at City West Housing Trust, added: “Barton Village is a flagship regeneration project and we have been looking for innovative solutions in a number of different areas, not least on the heating side. “This solution from Belfry will enable us to heat properties at a cost that tenants can more readily afford so we are addressing any fuel poverty issue head on. “Crucially, it will also alert us automatically when vulnerable residents are not using heating and hot water, which is a great early warning mechanism, particularly in the winter months when outside temperatures plummet.” The EcoPod will be installed on the three remaining blocks at Barton Village as well as Craunton, Cremer, Ewood and Kemball Houses in the next phase of the high-rise improvement programme at Ladywell Green in Eccles., followed by an additional four high rise blocks in Manchester. Work on Engels House is expected to be completed in March 2012.
Flagship Barton Village Adopts EcoPod Heating System! Salford-based City West Housing Trust has appointed Warrington-based building and maintenance company Belfry Group to install EcoPod Heating System at a development in Eccles. Belfry's EcoPod system will be installed at City West Housing Trust's £14.3m Barton Village development, which is expected to be completed in 2015 and consists of 4No. High Rise blocks where EcoPod will be installed. Colette McKune, Director of asset management at City West Housing Trust, said: "Barton Village is a flagship regeneration project and we have been looking for innovative solutions in a number of different areas, not least on the heating side. In the past we have had fuel poverty issues in our blocks so we knew we had to develop a renewable strategy that was going to provide a solution for our tenants. This solution from Belfry enables us to heat properties at a cost that tenants can more readily afford so we are addressing the fuel poverty issue head on. Crucially, it also alerts us automatically when vulnerable residents are not using heating and hot water, which is a great early warning mechanism, particularly in the winter months when outside temperatures plummet. This will help us educate tenants on energy efficiency and significantly reduce their fuel bills."
